AGM X2 - Rugged Adventure Phone Review

Gear: AGM X2

The crew from RuggedSA asked me to review the AGM x 2 rugged smart phone. However, calling it a smartphone doesn’t really do it justice, because this phone operates in another realm. I’m going to be honest: I didn’t know they even make phones like this. It’s a game changer for any adventurer out there, and better still, it could be a life saver. I will get to that part later… but as you can tell, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this beast! I know that the ‘rugged’ smartphone market is rapidly picking up and I have a sneaky suspicion that once you make the transition to a phone like this, you won’t look at another smartphone in the same way again. So let’s go and check this badboy out, because I’m not sure about you, but I am done with cracked screens and ‘pap’ batteries.

Let’s take a closer look…

What’s in the box?

So I received my black box in the post, and if I had to judge this book by its cover, I would say we are off to a good start. Once opened, it sure didn’t disappoint…. if it was a music box, it would be rock and roll all the way, baby! And lo and behold… encased in red, lay the holy grail of smart phones. Off course all the other goodies were also there, the USB-C charger and earphones, but what floated my boat, was the floating module. This is gonna be fun… (oh and by the way, AGM holds the patent on smart phone floating modules, so this phone ain’t going down like a lead balloon, like most of my jokes when my parents in law are around).

The AGM X2 is a beast, but I’ve said that before…. maybe that’s why it’s called AGM x2, because it’s so true, you gotta say it twice. With a rubber and metal shockproof design, 5.5” FHD AMOLED display and weighing in at 250g, this phone means business, and they are taking it outside. This phone can take a punch or two, in fact, you can drop it from a drone! Check the video here, but kids, don’t try that at home.

It has a certified IP68 rating and MIL-STD-810G which is the highest military standard for products. This means it’s shockproof, dirt proof, dust proof and waterproof, deemed fit to submerse up to a maximum depth of 1.5m underwater for up to thirty minutes.

So I take a lot of photos, and I take them seriously. (But not selfies guys, that’s not cool, I only take selfies like, uh sometimes.) The AGM X2 has three cameras (okay maybe it should’ve been called AGM x 3 then?1?). It is fitted with a quality dual 12MP Sony IMX386 1.25-micron large-pixel camera, ensuring that you can capture all those special moments of you and your favourite mountain! So what’s in it for Selfie-lovers (and I’m asking for a friend)? Well, let’s just say the 16MP front camera won’t disappoint, so your solo adventure moments will be instagram gold in no time.

And lastly, for the video vloggers, the X2 shoots in full 4k UHD giving you a full action packed quality content bundle device.

Below some photos I took with the AGM X2, playing around with the modes and HDR functions.

The AGM X2 has built in sensors to measure pressure, ambient temperature, humidity, altitude and VOC sensors. This is integrated into the below apps:

  1. AGM Tools - compass, protractor, loupe, torch, ruler, gradienter, plummet and painting. Dream tool for the everyday handyman!

  2. AGM Air - detecting the VOC (volatile organic compounds) of all environments (indoors & outdoors) which can be useful for those working in areas with high levels of toxic gasses and compounds ( this is some pretty cool stuff right there!)

There is also a fingerprint reader located on the back to register your personal identity within 0.1 seconds for phone and data security.

I mentioned life saving earlier and this phone literally has the power to do that. What’s more, if you have a wife who’s always on your case when you are adventuring, then this phone is also a relationship-saver! Trust me on this one, and thank me later. I have been in the dog box way too many times for running our of battery juice, and I ain’t going back there. So you see, with the AGM X2 ‘s massive 6,000mAh battery, tested to last around 480h (standby mode) and 50h (talking and general use) it is bound to keep you out of trouble for a while.

This machine charges super fast via USB Type-C Cable (more or less 1hour for a full charge) and also supports 4k monitor output.

Water is life, but not so much when it comes to phones. So throwing a perfectly good phone into water to test this preposterous “waterproof” statement felt like sacrilege. But ye of small faith, this phone and the water did not become one. Not today water, not today! Being IP68 certified and approved, you will have 99 problems in life, but a water soaked phone won’t be one of them. And once the phone’s floating device is clipped on, you and your phone can float gently down the stream, or not so gently into that good night.

The AGM X2 truly blew my mind and expectations out of the water, oh, and in the water as well. The ruggedness is flawless and passes all outdoor elements swimmingly. No wonder it passed a diving test under freezing temperatures in the North Pole and a trip up the Himalayas.

If you are an adventurer, explorer or just scared of ending up in the dogbox again, invest in this phone! Hopfully this post was a bit of a carrot to finally get you off them apples!
