Accommodation: Kwelanga Sunset
If Baardskeerdersbos is an undiscovered gem in the Overberg, then Kwelanga is the crowning jewel. With a population of approximately 110 people, it’s safe to say you will be getting away from the maddening crowds. It is therefore the perfect escape from the city, just 20km east of Gansbaai, beautifully nestled in the Overberg. And what beats a retro caravan and eco tent experience in the mountains?
Kwelanga is perfect for friends and family, with two very different, but equally charming accommodation choices… you will have to rock, paper, scissors who gets which option, but tbh, Suna and I couldn’t decide because they are both so fantastic! So, we slept in one option the one night, and another option the second night. Problem solved!
The first night we were in the luxury tent, with the most beautiful ensuite outdoor bathroom and double bed, looking out over the views for days. It’s definitely glamping of the highest order. The tent also has a fully equipped outdoor kitchen and fire pit, where guests can braai and ‘kuier’ under the clear night sky. We had a beautiful fish braai and spent the night at the fire, gazing at the milky way above us. The tent was cozy as we tucked ourselves away until the next morning.
Baardskeerdersbos has a handful of local pubs, each one with its own character. If you looking for a quick cold one, it ain’t going to be quick! The locals will keep you company for hours, telling stories about the town’s history and sharing the love of adventure and travel. Gansbaai is just around the corner, and you can drive through for the day to De Kelders and Stanford, if you are keen for some antique shopping, wine tasting or visiting the local weekend markets.
The second night we tried out the converted vintage caravan – I know guys don’t often use this word, but it was really cute! There is even a little Smeg retro fridge inside. This spot also comes with outdoor kitchen, outside bathroom and braai area.
The highlight however was watching the sunset from the Kol-Kol style hot tub with a G&T in hand. This time of the afternoon is golden hour – the entire mountain range looked like it was shimmering. What a fantastic place to enjoy nature and marvel at the beauty of this area.
All in all, this is a must visit and the entire area of Baardskeerdersbos is so special, which makes the journey extra special from the start to the end.
If you are therefore looking for a place that is off the grid where you can relax and reconnect with nature, then this is the perfect spot. We cannot wait to go back!
